Designing for technology change

Introduction

This is a true cross-sector project with multiple stakeholders collaborating to drive innovation within renewable energy. Its purpose is exploring the solution of energy storage in Molten Salt and the business case for the commercialization of this innovative technology.

Molten Salt Energy Storage (MOSS) — Future-proofing the Renewable Energy System is a CRIF-project facilitated by Energy Cluster Denmark. It is in collaboration with DIN Forsyning, Seaborg Technologies, DTU – Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, Viegand Maagøe, Blue Consulting. The Cost Reduction & Innovation Forum (CRIF)-model is primarily used, focusing on projects that contribute to cost reductions.

Challenge

Solving how we can store energy from the many different renewable energy sources at a low cost is essential for the success of the green transition.

The end consumer energy supplier DIN Forsyning is the project’s problem owner that seeks to transform its business by bringing more renewable energy sources. All other project partners are part of the problem-solving team, led by Seaborg Technologies. Seaborg is at the forefront of advanced and innovative, nuclear reactor technology based on molten salt. Working to provide abundant, affordable, and sustainable energy available to all, Seaborg is the leading Molten Salt reactor start-up outside of North America. In this project, Seaborg matured the corrosion control and material understanding enabling the use of these molten salts for both molten salt reactors as well as salt-based energy storage.

Solution

The solution we delivered consists of product storytelling, a new use case, a pitch deck, and investor animation displayed on the official MOSS website.

Result

KIRT x THOMSEN was a perfect match for this project with our extensive experience in helping clean-tech go through all early-stage development phases. Being a long-standing partner to Energy Innovation Cluster, we engaged and contributed from start to finish.

The project team succeeded in creating a business case for the energy sectors’ future use of energy storage in Molten Salt, which will help advance cross-sector collaboration to solve renewable energy storage.

Our project is shortlisted for the prestigious Danish Design Award 2021 in the 'visionary concepts' category and Index Award 2021.
