Designing for technology change

Introduction

Arven is a national knowledge center for renewable energy in Norway. Their mission is to inspire and educate the next generation to understand and take part in the green transition.

Challenge

Arven wanted a digital tool to engage young people—specifically 9th-grade students—in learning about Norway’s current energy system and the path towards a carbon-neutral future.

The goal was to develop a pilot project, compatible with iPads and classroom use, that could later evolve into a larger educational platform and physical exhibition.

Solution

We helped conceptualize and develop the storytelling framework and visual experience to make the complex energy system both engaging and educational.

We designed and built an interactive digital exhibition in the form of a digitally animated map of Norway. The platform allows students to explore:

— How Norway’s energy system works today — where power plants are located, how energy is transported, and where it is consumed.

— What a future net-zero society could look like, through a hands-on simulation where students build their own sustainable energy community.

The interface encourages experimentation: students can place renewable energy sources, ports, and cities in realistic locations and receive immediate feedback through simple “smart / not smart” messages — turning complex learning into play.

We were responsible for the full solution, including concept development, UX/UI design, animations, and technical implementation.

Result

The result is a digital teaching tool that bridges education and engagement. The platform is already being used in pilot classrooms and has received strong feedback for its accessibility and creative learning potential.

The project has laid the foundation for a larger next phase, including possibilities for VR integration, Nordic energy exchange scenarios, and a physical model for schools.
